Trailer Inspection Checklist

Tires & Wheels:

Condition Tread depth, weathering, evenly seated, bulges, embedded objects, uneven wear
>
Air Pressure Normal loss is 1 to 2 lbs. per check when cold, increase for heavy loads.
>
Spokes Bent, Broken or missing; check by tapping spokes to test for ring when tensioned or thud when loose, set 1/2 turn per time.
>
Rims Maximum out of round, out of true = .5mm (thickness of a dime); spin wheel with index against stationary pointer.
>
Wheel Bearings Grab top & Bottom of tire & Flex, No free play (click) between hub & axle: No growl when spinning.
Lights Wiring & Electric:
>
Wiring No frayed, pinched, bare wires, routed correct; check at hitch
>
Signals Function correctly; no sharp broken lenses; attached securely, good ground.
Chains Security Chains & Chassis:
>
Chains Check chains for weak links, wear areas, check hooks and cross chains for safety.
>
Accessory Mounts Securely mounted; no missing bolts, nothing interferes, limits or contact with suspension
>
Suspension Check Shocks and Springs; smooth damping & return; check for air leaks, oil leaks, preload same on both shocks; check spring leafs.
>
Trailer Body Securely mounted; check bolts.
>
Hitch Assembly Securely mounted; missing bolts, cotter pins, cracks or rust, thin film of grease on ball.
